Further information and details of how to access the findings are discussed in the following IDMC press release:

Internal displacement to urban areas: the Tufts-IDMC Profiling Study

In 2006, the need to better understand the number and situation of internally displaced people (IDPs) in urban centres led IDMC to commission the Feinstein International Center at Tufts University to develop and test an urban IDP profiling methodology.

The resulting Tufts-IDMC Profiling Study aims to help all organisations which promote the rights of IDPs in conflict-affected countries to collect and analyse information on people displaced into cities.

The study had three main objectives:

- To develop generic research tools to be used for profiling urban IDPs, including to make population estimates.

- To generate comparative data on IDPs and non-IDPs in urban areas, including demographic and livelihood characteristics, access to services, economic integration, and whether the assistance and protectionneeds of IDPs differ from that of non-IDPs.

- To use the data to work with governments and humanitarian organisations to develop programs and advocacy strategies that assist IDPs and protect their rights.

The project took place from 2006-2008, in three urban locations: Khartoum, Sudan; Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire; and Santa Marta, Colombia. Surveys were conducted in each city, and the resulting case studies and information on the methodology used can be found at www.internal-displacement.org/urban or http://fic.tufts.edu.

Refugee Support, the refugee arm of the Metropolitan Support Trust, has recently commissioned research into how refugee community and mainstream organisations assist and support disabled refugees and asylum-seekers in London. The objectives of the research are to: map existing work; assess unmet need; identify barriers to accessing services, explore the concepts of disability and address the shortfalls in service provision. Research findings will be available in November and released at a dissemination event at City Hall in London. For more information about this research contact Charlotte Keeble, Research and Consultancy Manager on 020 7501 2214.

Hello and welcome to this new Refugee Research Blog for the 2008-2009 academic year. This blog will now form a part of our growing online resources to help support both the taught masters programme in Refugee Studies at the University of East London and also the Refugee Council Archive and associated collections held within the archives at the UEL Docklands Campus Library.

This blog will be used to provide updates on key information related speficaly to research within the refugee studies and forced migration fields. In addition, one of my plans for the forthcoming academic year is to develop an online Refugee Research Portal which will help to bring together a comprehensive range of resources including materials from our collections and also a comprehensive listing of resources which are available over the web. Further information in this regard will be posted here shortly.

Please feel free to use this blog and to recommend any improvements that you would like to see and we would very much like you to consider posting any comments to our posts here on the blog.

I hope you find this blog useful and all feedback and comments would be appreciated.

This will be the last post in this Blog for a few weeks as I will be away on annual leave for a short break. On my return I will be updating the range of blogs and online services offered by the Refugee Archives service here at UEL ahead of a re-launch towards the middle of September, to coincide with the start of the new academic term.

Researching Asylum in London (RAL). Major new website

(note from HC: well worth looking at/being aware of this)
www.researchasylum.org.uk

RAL is an independent database of research on refugee and asylum issues relevant to London. The aim of this project is to make research more accessible to service providers and policy-makers working in the field. The database contains summaries of research and the aims, methodology, key findings, conclusions and recommendations are easily identifiable. You can search by keywords, explore by population or theme or browse by location. The site already includes the final report of the Project Co-ordinator from the pilot phase of Welcome To Your Library. The site is hosted by the Information Centre about Asylum and Refugees (ICAR) and the About Us section of the website provides fuller information on how the site came about, criteria for inclusion and how to suggest items for inclusion.
